A rectangle is the shape that wastes the least wall. Above a vanity unit it can run the full width of the unit; in a narrow bathroom it can go portrait and give you height instead of width. With LED lighting down both long edges, your face is lit from the sides, which is the flattering direction – light from above alone casts shadows under the eyes and chin.

Portrait or landscape?

Landscape suits a wide vanity unit and a room where two people use the basin. Portrait suits a narrow wall, an en suite or a downstairs cloakroom, and gives you a taller reflection in a small footprint. Both are available in the same default range, from 40 to 200 cm in 10 cm steps. You can also enter your own width and height to the millimetre on the product page.

Sizing against the unit

Keep the mirror between 70 and 90 per cent of the width of the vanity unit, and leave 15 to 25 cm between the top of the unit and the bottom of the glass. If you want the mirror to run the full width instead, that is a deliberate look rather than a mistake – just keep the edges clear of any wall light or shelf.

Where the light sits

On a rectangle the LED runs down both long edges, which is what makes it flattering: light arriving from the sides fills in the shadows that a ceiling fitting casts under the eyes and chin. On a tall portrait mirror the same strips light you from head to waist rather than from above, which is the difference you notice when shaving. All of it is backlit or edge-lit rather than a bare strip in your eyeline.
