Large wall mirrors

Nothing changes a room as quickly as a large mirror. A narrow hall reads as twice as wide, a dark back room borrows the daylight from the window opposite, and a low ceiling looks higher if the mirror runs vertically. The rule of thumb is simple: a mirror that looks slightly too big on the wall is usually the right one.

How large is large?

We treat 100 cm as the threshold and make mirrors up to 200 cm in either direction. Above that, glass becomes difficult to handle and to deliver safely – if you need a whole wall covered, the answer is two or three panels butted together rather than one enormous sheet, which is also how home gym mirror walls are usually built.

Full-length mirrors on the wall

For a mirror you can see yourself in head to toe, choose one 140 to 170 cm tall and hang it with the bottom edge 30 to 40 cm above the floor. In theory a mirror half your height is enough, but that assumes you stand at exactly the right distance and that everyone in the house is the same height. All our mirrors are wall-mounted; we do not make freestanding or leaning mirrors.

Where a large mirror pays off most

On the long wall of a hall, opposite a window if there is one. Above a fireplace in a living or sitting room, where a wide, low mirror follows the chimney breast. On the wall at the top of the stairs. In a bedroom, where a tall mirror replaces a wardrobe door mirror without taking up floor space. If you want the scale without a hard rectangle, a large arch mirror gives you the same wall coverage with a softer top edge.

Weight, fixing and finish

A large mirror is heavy, so fix it at several points into something solid – on plasterboard use heavy-duty cavity fixings or screw into the studs, and on masonry use plugs rated for the weight. Safety film is worth adding on any large mirror in a busy space – the glass then fails as one sheet rather than as loose fragments.
