Irregular and wavy mirrors

An irregular mirror is one whose outline follows no standard geometry – a wave, a soft asymmetric curve, a free-form outline. Because ours are frameless and cut from a single sheet, there is no border to argue with the shape: what you hang on the wall is the outline itself.

Wavy, asymmetric or pebble-shaped?

The words get used interchangeably, and the difference is one of degree. A wavy mirror has a rippling edge and is the most decorative of the three. An asymmetric mirror is calmer – recognisably a rectangle or an oval that has been pulled out of true. A pebble outline sits between them – rounded and irregular, but without the repeating rhythm of a wave. If the room is already busy, the asymmetric end of the range will wear better over time.

Where to hang one

An irregular mirror wants a plain wall and space around it, which makes it a good answer above a sideboard or a chest of drawers, on a bare stairwell wall, or in a bedroom where it replaces artwork. Size and proportion

Because the outline is uneven, judge the size by the widest and tallest points rather than by area. Over furniture, keep the widest point to 70 to 90 per cent of the width of the piece below. On a bare wall, err on the large side – an irregular mirror that is too small reads as an accident rather than a choice.
