Arch and half-moon mirrors

The arch is the shape that has taken over interiors in the last few years, and unlike most trends it has a practical reason behind it. A flat bottom edge sits parallel to a console table, a mantelpiece or a vanity unit, so the mirror looks anchored; the curved top breaks the run of straight lines that doors, windows and tiles create. You get the tidiness of a rectangle and the softness of a circle in one shape.

Frameless, and what that means here

Most arch mirrors sold in Ireland are framed pieces in gold, black or timber, and many of them are tall floor-standing mirrors that lean against a wall. Ours are different in two ways, and it is worth being straightforward about it: they are frameless, so the arch is cut into the glass itself rather than formed by a frame, and they are wall-mounted – we do not make leaning or freestanding mirrors. If what you want is a leaning mirror in a gold frame, we are not the right supplier. If you want the arch as a clean shape on the wall, that is exactly what we make.

Where an arch works

Above a console in the hall, which is the shape at its most useful. Above a basin, where the flat base aligns with the vanity unit – see bathroom mirrors for sizing. Over a mantelpiece in a period sitting room, where the curve echoes the head of a door or a sash window. In pairs on a wide wall, which reads better than one very wide arch.

Proportion and size

A narrow, tall arch reads as architectural; a wide, shallow one reads as decorative. Over furniture, keep the width to 70 to 90 per cent of the piece below, with 15 to 25 cm between them. If you want an arch you can see yourself in head to toe on the wall, go for 140 to 170 cm tall with the bottom edge 30 to 40 cm above the floor — at that scale it belongs with the large wall mirrors.
